The Laboratory pursues two main research areas: one of them concerns the presence of gases in porous media, with special emphasis put on gasogeodynamic phenomena; the other is connected with the stereological analysis understood as a method of the quantitative description of the geometrical structure of materials, and rocks in particular.
The research on the presence of gases in porous media concerns the following:
gas and rock outbursts, particularly gas and coal outbursts,
phenomena of sorption, filtration, and diffusion of gas in porous materials, particularly in coal,
metrology as applied in the mining industry, particularly methods used to determine the presence of methane in coal beds,
carbon dioxide sequestration.
The research connected with the stereological analysis concerns the following:
quantitative description of the geometrical structure of rocks and other materials,
application of image analysis and mathematical morphology in the process of measuring rock structures,
mapping and 3D analysis of rock joint surfaces, composites, and other materials.
