Research Activities

Laboratory of Micrometrics

The Laboratory pursues two main research areas: one of them concerns the presence of gases in porous media, with special emphasis put on gasogeodynamic phenomena; the other is connected with the stereological analysis understood as a method of the quantitative description of the geometrical structure of materials, and rocks in particular.

The research on the presence of gases in porous media concerns the following:

  • gas and rock outbursts, particularly gas and coal outbursts,
  • phenomena of sorption, filtration, and diffusion of gas in porous materials, particularly in coal,
  • metrology as applied in the mining industry, particularly methods used to determine the presence of methane in coal beds,
  • carbon dioxide sequestration.

The research connected with the stereological analysis concerns the following:

  • quantitative description of the geometrical structure of rocks and other materials,
  • application of image analysis and mathematical morphology in the process of measuring rock structures,
  • mapping and 3D analysis of rock joint surfaces, composites, and other materials.
