The Strata Mechanics Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences holds official authorisation, granted by the President of the State Mining Authority (WUG), to act as an Expert for Mining Plant Operations in the field of methane hazards and gas and rock outburst hazards.
We offer specialised testing, analyses and expert assessments concerning the occurrence of methane and other gases in the rock mass, carried out for the needs of mining operations, underground construction projects and the assessment of gas-related conditions within the rock mass.
Our services include in particular:
- methane and gas content analysis of the strata,
- assessment and forecasting of methane hazards and gas and rock outburst hazards in underground mining operations,
- classification of the strata into appropriate methane hazard and gas and rock outburst hazard categories,
- determination of periodic methane emission factors from extracted material,
- determination of the quantity and composition of gas mixtures occurring within the strata,
- preparation of specialist opinions, analyses and expert assessments relating to gas hazards.
The investigations are carried out using specialised laboratory equipment and research methods developed at the Institute, enabling the determination of free and sorbed gas content in rocks as well as the assessment of gas release from the rock mass and extracted material.
